If the man in your life is a serious do-it-yourself, handyman sort of guy whose workshop boasts a substantial array of tools, and you want to buy him a tool as a gift – you've come to the right place. Women customarily shy away from buying their handyman tools as gifts because they're afraid they will get something that he already has, or something that he just doesn't want. This usually leads to the purchase of a gift certificate, which is okay, but not very personal.

Below are some tools that would please any handyman, no matter how experienced he is or how many tools he has. Mind you, these tools are not cheap, and they are anything but commonplace, but they are all superb and eminently useful in the right project scenario. I own most of the tools listed and can attest to their quality and usefulness.

I provide links to the tools listed, but as always, be sure to shop around the internet to ensure that you get the best price available. Tools prices on the internet vary substantially – especially on high-end tools such as those listed below.

The DeWalt Self-Leveling Line Laser: Horizontal and Vertical (DW087K)
I have one of these and find it to be the ultimate tool for many household improvement and building tasks. After it self-levels, the tool shoots a laser light beam out either vertically or horizontally. It is ideal for hanging pictures; installing wall plugs uniformly around a room; installing shelving; marking hidden studs for nailing or screwing and much more. It's a sturdy, durable unit that operates on 3 AA batteries. New, this tool sells for under $200. Used/reconditioned it's usually around $130. http://www.tools-plus.com/dewalt-dw087k.html

The Porter-Cable 1″ Narrow Crown Stapler Kit, 18 Gauge (NS100B)
This tool, which requires a compressor to operate, will truly open new vistas for the handyman in your life. This staple gun fires long, narrow crown staples that attach wood-to-wood – thus replacing nails. Attaching thin woods, such as 1/8″ plywood and Masonite to frames is quite difficult when done with a hammer and nails, and often rather weak. This staple gun makes quick work of such tasks and provides incredible strength and durability. I'd be lost without mine. Great for furniture and shelving work and repairs, as well as new construction of smaller items. This tool will get lots of use! I'd be lost without mine. Sells for around $100. http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2064041/26364/Porter-Cable-1-Narrow-Crown-Stapler-Kit–18-Ga–Model-NS100B.aspx

Porter Cable C2002-WK 150 PSI Pancake Air Compressor
This lightweight, portable air compressor is ideal for smaller tasks around the house. It uses 110 volts, has a quiet motor, no-skid feet and comes with quick-connects. This is a low volume compressor designed to run smaller pneumatic tools such as staplers and finish nailers. The convenient, small footprint design, which includes a generous handle, makes it easily portable and very handy. Sells for under $200. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=air+compressor&cid=996902227721052147&sa=title#p

Bosch DAF220K Digital Angle Finder Kit
The Bosch DWM40LK Digital Miter Finder Kit includes a hard foam case plus leg extension. This amazing tool is actually 4 tools in one: an angle finder, a cut calculator, and a protractor and level. This handy little gem makes finding angles and setting saws a breeze. The Compound Cut Calculator is incredibly handy. It automatically determines the exact miter and bevel settings necessary to make each crown molding cut fit precisely. Great for cutting molding, determining roofing cuts, making boxes and a-frame structures, and too much more to mention. This tool sells for around $150. http://www.acetoolonline.com/Bosch-DAF220K-Digital-Angle-Finder-Kit-p/bos-daf220k.htm

The Occidental Leather® 2550 – SuspendaVest™ Leather Package
This is the ultimate tool carrying system. It's not a belt, rather it's a customizable system that starts with a comfortable harness that puts the weight on the shoulders, instead of the waist area. The design prevents slippage and makes even heavy tool loads seem light. The owner of one of these systems can fully adjust fit, add or remove pockets, as needed and put it on or take it off easily because of the quick release system. Occidental Leather® has been making superb products for 30 years. I believe they make the best tool carrying systems available. This package sells for around $250. http://www.bestbelt.com/product/belt-free/2550_beltless.html

When it comes to home renovations, it is usually easy to spot the work of an amateur handyman. The professional's work usually looks much better. But it doesn't have to be that way.

True, the professional has years of training and experience to guide him, and most home handymen just don't have the same level of expertise. But there are ways that we, the amateurs, can bring the quality of our work up a notch or five and at least begin to approach the quality that the pros achieve.

It's A Poor Workman Who Blames His Tools…

Well, that's true if the workman has good tools to start with, and uses the right tool for the job at hand. Home handymen, too often, buy cheap tools, and try to get one tool to do every job they tackle. Take a look at the tools that you're using and ask “Is this really the right tool for the job?”

You just bought a five pack of paint brushes to $7.99 to do the cut in before you haul out the rollers. The pro paid $40 for a good brush. It shouldn't be much of a surprise that you will slop paint all over the door casing, no matter how much you mask, and how careful you are, and that the pro can paint right up to it without masking. And you can bet that he didn't buy whatever paint was on sale at the local department store. He bought the good stuff.

Remember that when you set out to do the job yourself, the objective should be to save what the contractor charges for labor, overhead and profit. The objective shouldn't be to do the job for nothing!

The same holds true for all the projects you tackle.

If the contractor with years of experience needs a Makita rotary saw, a good table saw, a sliding compound miter saw and an air compressor to undertake your $10,000 bathroom renovation, what makes you think you can accomplish it with a $29.99 Skil saw that you picked up at Sears?

Budget to buy the right tools and the right materials for the job. You'll be glad you did. Good tools will last the home handyman a lifetime, and make each subsequent job cheaper, faster and easier. And you'll be a lot happier with your results.

The newest Campbell Hausfeld compressor up for review is the 2 Gallon Air Compressor with Nailer Holder and Bonus 2 in 1 Nailer/Stapler Kit Item Number: FP209599AV.

Ease of Use, Performance: 20/25
Look & Feel: 20/25
Features 20/25
How much I enjoy 22/25

Total: 82/100

The Campbell Hausfeld line of air compressors has made quite a change and continues to improve year after year and model by model. I reviewed a Campbell Hausfeld compressor of this same size a little while ago and now get the chance to revisit the same around the house and do it yourselfers workhorse again.

The Campbell Hausfeld Twinstack 2 gallon compressor is a nice 100 PSI maximum air compressor that has the two tanks for storing air during use. The compressor has an on off switch as well as plenty of safety features like the auto shut off when the tanks are full and the safety release valve on the unit.
The tanks are connected by a solidly welded pipe that makes up part of the framing of the unit. All the welds as well as the handle and the feet are securely on the compressor and the compressor pump portion of the compressor unit is housed in a nice plastic casing so you cannot get your fingers near any hot or moving parts.

The model I am reviewing comes with a nailer/stapler kit and has everything you need to start using it including the handy coiled hose and quick coupling. You also get a small assortment of connections for things like air mattresses and other air inflation as well as an air chuck and the quick coupler for easy connecting of the different tools.

The Campbell Hausfeld 2 Gallon Compressor comes ready to use except for attaching the included 25 foot air hose and whatever attachment you like. It even comes with a small amount of Teflon tape attached to the hose ends for a quick start of your compressor. The compressor is great for around the house and do it yourself jobs like inflating air mattresses, balls and tires as well as things like general handyman work like nailing, stapling and smaller air tools.

I unpacked and used my compressor in about five minutes for nailing up some small signs warning those pesky dogs next door to stay out of my yard as well as shored up a small fence I bought at a home improvement store. I added some extra nails to the fence because I bought this really inexpensive slat decorative fence and wanted to add something as the staples they used where kind of short. The air compressor and nailer/stapler had plenty of power to get the included 3/4 inch staples all the way through both slats.

The nailer kit that comes with the 2 gallon compressor is a nice all around household and small job tool that can handle jobs like putting up signs, tacking down shingles or roofing materials and even repairing furniture. Try putting together one of those inexpensive shelf units with the cardboard back and use the air nailer to fasten down that backing in half the time.

The staples and nails the kit comes with are a good size for around the house use and will last quite awhile unless you're doing some big jobs. You can also purchase the replacement nails and staples at many home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot. They have a wide variety of staple sizes as well as nails and brads for many different jobs like furniture repair, screening for windows and roofing repairs.
The nailer/stapler works very well for all the jobs I tried it on and is a simple to use and very safe tool that operates at about 85 Psi but you can vary the pressure for different depths of nailing. The nailer comes with the safety feature of having to push the tip down against something and pulling the trigger in order for it to fire. The magazine is easy to load and holds about a hundred nails or staples and has the convenient holder on the side of the air tank for easy storage.

Using the compressor is as easy as ensuring the bottom water drain is closed and plugging the compressor in and then turning it on. The two gauges are for the tank pressure and the hose pressure you want to use that is adjusted by the middle knob. The big knob for adjusting the hose pressure is easy to use and the entire process of pumping the tanks to their full capacity is pretty quick.

Although the compressor is loud you can still use it in confined spaces like indoors in a house if you don't mind a little noisy work environment. This is not a compressor for use indoors like the workshop without hearing protection if you're going to be close to the compressor and you should use safety glasses or goggles whenever using power tools or air compressor tools for your own protection.

My compressor took about 3 and a half minutes to fill from fully empty to the max the tanks would hold till the fill valve shut off the compressor. Comparing this model to the single tank 2 gallon compressor I reviewed previously this model, FP209599AV, filled the twin tanks almost a minute faster. The dual tanks mean a better even flow of air for your tools and other uses and a slightly better tank and compressor setup. The compressor is easy to transport and weighs about 19 pounds for the entire compressor tank assembly with the coil hose attached.

The compressor has enough power to inflate several bike tires and other inflatables or I drove in about twenty staples on that slat fence before I had to plug the compressor back in. I tried a little experiment and found that it works handy as a portable repair device for mending fences or stapling up signs like garage sale signs. You can easily plug the compressor in at home to fill the tanks and go to the corner to tack up a few signs or carry the tank to the front of the house and fix that decorative fence.

The tanks hold the two gallons of air for a continuous pressure while using air tools like the included nail gun stapler or others you can purchase separately like an air wrench. Although this is great for a do it yourselfer or at home for inflating those balls and even car tires it does not perform as a workshop air compressor for large jobs. I used this compressor for nailing up some signs and fixing some furniture but it will not handle larger tasks like finishing nailers or large spray painters.

I used this model on some test painting and it does a decent job of painting but you will have to do a smaller area and then wait for the pressure to build back up. I painted an entire wall of a building with the previous model compressor and spent several days of painting a small area and then either adding more paint while the compressor built up pressure or moving the ladder and such. This size compressor is great for smaller jobs and is handy for its portability but not for a regular standing compressor for home woodworking or construction.

The Campbell Hausfeld Twinstack compressor is a nice smaller compressor that is well built for those smaller home jobs. All the welds and seams are well done and the entire unit is sturdy and well put together. The paint has lasted well on the previous model and the newer one looks to be the exact same quality craftsmanship I have come to know and depend on in Campbell Hausfeld.

For a nice all around smaller air compressor the Campbell Hausfeld Twinstack Air Compressor with stapler/nailer kit is a great buy and well worth the cost. Look at your local home improvement and hardware stores for one now.

I ordered this compressor to replace a little Delta that was a freebie when I bought a table saw. It was extremely quiet, and I wanted another one that was just as quiet. After reading the reviews for the Makita, I decided to give it a try. When it arrived, I looked for any shipping damage, and found none at all. It was in perfect shape. After filling it with oil and installing the air filter (5 minutes at most) I fired it up for the first time. The noise level is on par with my old one, but seems to run smoother. This is the first oil-filled compressor I have bought, hoping it will last for a while. As mentioned by someone else, after break-in, I changed the oil. I don't expect this to perform like a contractor's compressor, for one man working alone it is just fine. I mainly use nailers, and small tools. I do plan on tying it into my 4 gallon tank for even better performance when needed. So far, I'm pleased with this purchase.Best Buy Makita MAC700 Best Price, Buy Now! [Click Here!]

#Tips on Buying a Small Compressor

December 30th, 2009 by nicholasmclaughlin1964

Burnt and rusted refrigeration compressors by slworking2

A few useful tips for when buying an air compressor

1) Make sure each end of the receiver (tank) has an inspection hole (hole with a threaded bung in the centre of both dished ends). Every air receiver in the UK must have these holes, if it does not then the compressor is breaking CE regulations and it is against the law to be sold to the UK market. If you do come across a compressor without inspection holes please report is to the Compressed Air Society. They’ll appreciate your call!

2) Buy from a compressed air dealer. Reputable compressed air specialists really will offer you the best advise around and back that up with expert support and after care. Most importantly, they will advise you on the most suitable compressor for your application.

3) If you're buying a portable unit, look for large rubber wheels, a tall sturdy handle and big front feet. Even smaller units can be heavy and these features will really help.

4) Warranty. Is it on-site, off-site, does it include parts and labour? Make sure every component is covered and not just the pump.

You can easily be attracted by many of the low priced air compressors on sale now a days. These compressors are generally poor quality, perform badly and noisy! When it comes to buying an air compressor, the best overall advise we can offer is to buy the best you can afford. If you can spend a little bit more you will be getting a massive increase in value for money.

We hope this guide has helped?
